It's that time of year again, and we encounter various Christmas decorations while doing energy audits and building inspections. The Infrared Rocking Chair by FLIR T-640

We were performing an infrared thermal energy audit and blower door test on a municipal library building last week focusing on outside air penetration. I stepped into a quiet little room off the research wing and snapped this IR image of an empty rocking chair with a FLIR T640 camera

Local Salt Lake Catholic School Gets an Energy Audit

We recently finished performing an energy audit for a local Catholic School in Salt Lake City. This 50 year old building came through with flying colors! The air tightness of the classrooms offices and gymnasium was exceptional. Little needs to be done in regards to weatherizing this building for cold weather. Caulking, sealing and some weatherstripping and they'll be good for many more years.

Infrared Energy Audits for Parochial Schools, Non-Profits and 501Cs are performed at no cost, we strongly believe in giving back to the community and supporting charitable organizations.

Infrared Thermal Image of Jesus

On weekends we do energy audits for churches and non profit 501Cs and this morning I was busy in a small Catholic school all by myself going from room to room with the big blower door running. Infrared energy audits focus basically on exterior walls looking for cold air infiltration. The bluer the color, the colder the temp, and red is hot, and yellows and oranges are warm areas. We never bother looking at interior walls since everything on the wall is the same temperature and the entire wall will be the same color, unless a cell phone charger is plugged in, or a heater vent, even a GFCI outlet.

I finished scanning an exterior classroom wall and turned around towards the inside wall, WOW was I shocked to see the only thing warm on this cool inside wall was a little Jesus on the Cross wall hanging. I went back later and it was still showing up with thermal imaging. I guess I wasn't alone in the building today!

See the difference between cheap and expensive infrared cameras

Just because someone tells you they have an infrared camera doesn't make them professional grade. So many people are purchasing cheap entry level $1,200 thermal imagers and claiming to do infrared inspections these days that no one questions the quality level of the results. The resolution of these cameras is around 1/273 of a megapixel which makes it very difficult to properly perform building diagnostics. When using HD infrared video and still cameras the results are astonishing. When someone solicits your business - ask them what the image resolution is.

Our new FLIR T640 is the first Infrared Video camera available

Take a look at some infrared videos that come out of the new FLIR T640 infrared camera. With this new camera in our arsenal we can easily produce an "infrared movie" of your new home or business. It also makes it much easier to show the buyer or seller and plumbing leaks, missing insulation, roof leaks and outside air penetration.
