Energy Auditing Movie Theatres - The top energy saving tip for multi screen theater operators
We performed energy audits on five different multi screen movie theaters last week in Utah County, UT. These were medium size (4-8 screen) around 25,000- 40,000 square foot buildings. There was one thing in common with 4 of the 5. No Makeup Air!! These cinemas were using the Christie Xenon projectors that need exhaust cooling fans connected to the outside. Christie recommends 400 - 750 cfm fans for their projectors. We tested these exhaust fans to be right at 600 cfm. If you multiply 600 cfm by 6 or 8, we are talking about 4,000 cfm being pulled out of the building, mostly through the doors in the lobby. This amounts to multiple ACH (air changes per hour) and the main reason for the $600-800 monthly heating bills.
In the energy audit report we highly recommend the installation of an Acme Direct Fired Gas Heated Make Up Air Unit that would supply 4,000 cfm of heated air to make up for the conditioned air being sucked out by the projector fans.
The rooftop HVAC units were are clean and properly installed, along with the projector exhausts and concession condensers - what is absent is any source of make up air.
The larger screened MegaPlex (12-20 screen) Cinemas that we have audited all had multiple make up air units.

Testing the Rinnai R85 Tankless Water Heater
The Rinnai R85 Tankless Water Heater - We are seeing more and more of these guys
The Rinnai Tankless Water Heater Revisited - I blogged about these units 2 years ago when the jury was still out. Well now the jury is in, and I am no longer a skeptic. They really work and they work really well. I saw them all over England and Europe a few years ago, then they appeared at the condos at our ski resorts. Utah has 14 ski resorts and 10 are in the Salt Lake City area so we inspect a lot of these condos. Most of these condos are rentals and time shares so they sit vacant most of the time. So the on demand tankless water heaters made great sense.
Now we are seeing these water heaters in more and more homes. The most common is the Rinnai Model R85. Last month we had several large vacant homes at Sundance with R85's installed so we put them to the test. We ran the hot water at every sink, tub and shower for 20 minutes. The thermostat was set on the Rinnai to 130 degrees. After 20 minutes the water coming out of the master shower was maintaining a constant 120 degrees. I remain almost awestruck at the performance of these tankless water heaters.

one half million cubic foot movie theater gets an energy audit
Energy Audits of Multi Screen Movie Theaters reaps major benefits for operator – Energy Auditing The MegaPlex
Our recent energy audits on movie theaters for a chain of MegaPlex Theaters operators are proving to impact their bottom line in a positive way. At one 24,000 sq ft multi screen complex in Colorado the reduction in winter time heating costs are nearly 50%. By utilizing the extremely high volume Tempest blower doors, major air leaks are being discovered in the projection rooms as well as the exit doors and front lobbies. Major air unbalance with the projector exhaust and make up air was a common problem. Alamo Infrared is a leader in providing energy audits on large commercial and public buildings in Colorado, Utah, Wyoming and Idaho.

Another 1 Million Cubic Foot Airplane Hangar Gets An Energy Audit - energy auditing the Schweiss Commercial Aviation Doors
Another 1 Million Cubic Foot Airplane Hangar Gets An Energy Audit - energy auditing the Schweiss Commercial Aviation Doors
The Aircraft Hangar Energy Audit - Energy Auditing Corporate and FBO Aircraft Hangar Energy Efficiency.
Today we finished yet another one million cubic foot aircraft hangar in Idaho. We are performing energy audits on large corporate aircraft hangars and larger heated hangars at FBO's in Idaho, Wyoming and Utah. We were very surprised to say the least at the quality of the Schweiss Commercial Aviation Doors. These hangar doors are the highest quality commercial aviation doors that we have found so far. They are very well insulated and seal very well. The largest hangar that we tested was just over 20,000 sq. ft. and the ceiling height of 45 feet - basically around one million cubic feet.
So far we have audited 15 hangars this month and they have all proven to be the most airtight and energy efficient of any commercial type building that we have ever audited.

Corporate Aircraft Hangar Energy Audit | Energy Efficient Aircraft Hangars

This month we are performing energy audits on all types of corporate aircraft hangars and larger heated hangars at FBO's in Idaho, Wyoming and Utah. No one knew just how weather tight and energy efficient these buildings would be. We were surprised to say the least. The hangars that we have performed energy audits on so far are very well insulated and most of the areas of air loss are at the tops of the hangar doors and around the bottom corners. The largest hangar that we tested was just over 20,000 sq. ft. and the ceiling height of 45 feet - basically around one million cubic feet.

So far we have audited 13 hangars this month and they have all proven to be the most airtight and energy efficient of any commercial type building that we have ever audited.
